The Story of Challah
Why cover dough?
Covering prevents surface drying and skin formation, retains moisture, and promotes an even rise—for a softer, airier, lighter loaf.
From Torah to the Shabbat table
In Numbers 15:18–21, challah means the portion separated from dough. Over time, the word came to describe the braided Shabbat loaf in Ashkenazi tradition.
The meaning of the braid
Its interwoven strands symbolize unity, peace, truth, and harmony—values woven together in the Jewish home.
Why two loaves?
The two loaves recall the double portion of manna that fell on Friday in honor of Shabbat, as told in Exodus 16:22.
